Synchronous Motor Excitation & Reactive Power Control

2023-12-26 · XIMA Technical Center

Why synchronous motors improve power factor and how excitation helps.

A synchronous motor’s speed locks to supply frequency; its field current sets the stator power factor—over-excited it supplies VARs, under-excited it absorbs them.

Modern units use static or brushless excitation with AVR for fast, low-maintenance voltage control under load and grid swings.

On large loads like mills and compressors, XIMA TDMK/TK/TD synchronous motors give high efficiency, stable speed and local power-factor correction, cutting losses and capacitor spend.
